About Metro United Way 2-1-1

The mission of 2-1-1 is to connect people with needed services.

Every hour of every day, someone in the Metro Louisville area or surrounding counties is in need of help, from finding substance abuse assistance to securing quality care for a child or an aging parent. There are so many agencies, services and help lines that people often don't know where to turn. 2-1-1 is changing that!

2-1-1 is an easy to remember number that connects people to important services, community needs and civic involvement opportunities. The 2-1-1 information and referral system is already in use across the nation and serves 192 million Americans- more than 65% of the population! Currently, there are 209 active 2-1-1 systems covering all or part of 41 states.

2-1-1 Service Area

Metro United Way 2-1-1 serves three counties in Indiana (Clark, Floyd, and Harrison) through a partnership with Indiana 2-1-1 and nine in Kentucky (Bullitt, Carroll, Jefferson, Henry, Nelson, Oldham, Shelby, Spencer and Trimble). Anyone can dial 2-1-1, speak to a trained counselor and receive information on the services they need.

Residents in the 2-1-1 service area will benefit by having access to information about services in many vital areas:

  • Children, Youth and Families
  • Support for Older Citizens and Persons with Disabilities
  • Volunteer Opportunities and Donations

2-1-1 will not replace existing agencies. In fact, 2-1-1 helps agencies by connecting them with people who may need their services.

Will call centers have trained employees?

Metro United Way uses a rigorous process that meets national 2-1-1 standards and guidelines when approving the application of a Call Center. Call Centers will be required to be accredited by the Alliance of Information and Referral Agencies (AIRS), which includes an external professional review of a program’s service delivery, resource database, reports and measures, cooperative relationships and governance.

Can 2-1-1 track information?

2-1-1 can track and record information from its callers, resulting in rich aggregate data about the types of calls a Call Center receives, the people who make the calls, what resources are currently available and where they are located. This information is of great value to a community.
