Our History
From the beginning 125 years ago, United Way has been connecting diverse groups of people
together to help improve the lives of people around us so that everyone has the opportunity
for a better life. It sounds a little like a joke, but it’s true: back in 1887 in Denver,
Colorado, a woman, two ministers, a priest and a rabbi came together to form the Charity
Organizations Society to help the community address severe welfare problems. That year,
their campaign to raise funds for local charities and relief services created a movement
that would spread throughout the country and eventually become the United Way.
In 1917, the agency that eventually became known as Metro United Way was started: originally
called the Louisville Federation of Social Agencies, it was the first of its kind below the
Mason-Dixon Line. In the almost 100 years since we began, our initial commitment to
improving lives and our community still holds strong, and, in fact, we still partner with
many of our original agencies and organizations. We bring the expertise and resources
together to meet our vision of a community whose people achieve their fullest potential
through education, financial stability and healthy lives.

Metro United Way advances the common good in our community by creating opportunities for a
better life for all. For over 95 years, Metro United Way has served our community and will
move forward throughout the next decade with a more focused approach to addressing
community-level issues by showing measurable progress in the areas of education, financial
stability and health, the building blocks for a good quality of life.
Metro United Way recognizes that it takes the whole community working together to reach our
mutual goals and we recruit the people and organizations from across the community who bring
the passion, expertise and resources needed to accomplish our goals. We invite you to be a
