Success By 6: Transition to Kindergarten
Goal: “All children and families in our community experience successful transitions to kindergarten.”
Throughout life, there are critical transition points that can dramatically impact future success for individuals and families. This is especially true for young children, birth to kindergarten entry, and their families. We believe that Metro United Way Success By 6 is uniquely positioned to focus on and impact the ease with which children and families transition into kindergarten. Because of the foundational role that kindergarten entry plays in the future school experience and relationship, and the critical connections that must be drawn between pre-kindergarten experience and formal kindergarten entry, this particular transition point is critical.
Kindergarten Countdown
Kindergarten Countdown is a collaborative effort that focuses on children in the year leading up to kindergarten entry with the goal that all children will experience a successful transition into kindergarten.
Kindergarten is the start of something big and we want for children, families and the community at large to be aware of this important time. Beginning in early summer, children who will start kindergarten in the fall can receive a free t-shirt at their local library and their parents receive information about it means to be prepared for kindergarten, including information regarding immunization requirements, the skills expected by kindergarten teachers and some tips to help develop these skills. In-coming kindergartners are encouraged to wear their “I’m going to kindergarten!” t-shirts to build their excitement and to let others know about this special time in their lives. Community events are held throughout the summer for these children and their families, including a Kindergarten Fair as the grand finale. The Kindergarten Fair provides more information for children and families with representation from the Mayor and Louisville Metro Government, JCPS, Catholic Schools, the Health Department, the Louisville Free Public Library and many more!
Camp Kindergarten
Camp Kindergarten is a Success By 6 program designed with a goal of helping families prepare themselves and their children for beginning kindergarten. Camp Kindergarten enables children to better understand and look forward to the kindergarten experience, meet staff, become familiar with the school building, and learn bus safety. The parents learn the skills their children need to know to become better prepared for entering kindergarten. In addition, parents are informed how to meet the requirements for public school enrollment, including immunizations, how to handle parent/teacher conferences and other important issues.
