Volunteer Recognition
2009 Youth Scholarship Winners Announced
Emily Goldstein and Shane T. James have been named the recipients of Metro United Way's Youth Scholarship Award.
Ms Goldstein, a graduate of Atherton High School, is a tireless advocate for environmental issues. She has won awards from the Louisville Zoo, where she has logged over 700 volunteer hours. She has served on the Zoo's Youth Board and was one of 16 teen chosen from around the world to study polar bears and climate change on a trip to the Arctic. She is involved in the Partnership for a Green City, recycling efforts, public presentations on the environment, the National Environmental Education Foundation, and as a correspondent for the Mother Nature Network. She plans to attend the University of Louisville in the fall.
Mr. James, a graduate of Charlestown High School, has served our community as a junior leader for his 4-H club and was named Outstanding Junior Leader in 2005 and 2008. Mr. James was inspired to volunteer as a firefighter after he and his sister were involved in a near-fatal auto accident in 2003, and he credits the swift response of the local fire department with saving their lives. He has received training as a firefighter and in 2007 was named Cadet of the Year by the Charlestown Volunteer Fire Department. Upon turning 18, he was promoted from cadet to his rookie year as a firefighter. He will attend the University of Louisville in the fall in preparation to earn a degree in nursing.
This is the 22nd year that Metro United Way has awarded Youth Scholarships to high school seniors or graduates who have demonstrated excellence in both academics and volunteer service to our community. The Scholarship awards $3,000 toward tuition and fees at a college or university in Kentucky or Indiana.
Congratulations Emily and Shane!
Bridgehaven Members Volunteer for MUW
When Metro United Way wanted to call a list of donors to thank them for their gifts, it meant making a lot of phone calls. Luckily, volunteers from Bridgehaven, a Metro United Way-supported agency, agreed to help out. Bridgehaven members, staff, and volunteers made a total of 1,520 calls, personally thanking donors for supporting the programs at Bridgehaven through their gifts to Metro United Way.
We wish to thank the dedicated folks at Bridgehaven for sharing their time and talents by volunteering at Metro United Way!
