Healthy Eating a Building Block for Success

Healthy Eating a Building Block for Success

For a lot of kids, summer is a carefree, happy time for enriching experiences such as summer camps, time with family, trips to museums, parks and libraries and other learning experiences.

However, for some students when the school doors close, they struggle to access educational opportunities and basic needs such as healthy meals and living. Because of this, we are proud to partner with several organizations that offer quality out-of-school time learning opportunities for our community's youth throughout the year.

During the summer, not only do some students lose about two months of reading and math skills, but some don't have access to a healthy diet and are at risk for obesity.

At Family and Children's Place, which provides individual, family, group and school-based counseling to help children and families stay in their homes and assist students to improve grades and relationships, kids spend time every day during the summer learning about and taking care of the on-site garden. They have learned to cook with what they've grown, and best of all, they eat at least one serving of fruits and vegetables from their own garden every day!

Success in school is the foundation for success in life, and healthy eating is a critical building block for that foundation!
